What to ask when you're pulled over by the cops

You've been pulled over and the cops are at your window... Your heart’s racing.

But this is not the moment to go blank.

So here’s your go-to script to keep yourself safe and in control:

1. “May I grab my license and registration from my glove compartment?”

Never make sudden moves... even for your wallet. Always ask before you reach for anything.

2. “Am I being detained?”

If it seems like they’re making you stick around longer than a standard traffic stop - or they ask you to wait - it’s fair to ask if you’re being detained.

If they say no, follow up with: “Am I free to go?

If they say yes, ask this next...

3. “Why am I being detained?”

They need a specific, legal reason.

They might not tell you on the spot... but ask anyway. If they do give a reason, your lawyer might be able to use it in court later.

4. “How long will I be detained?”

They probably won’t give you a clear answer, but asking this shows you’re paying attention and know your rights.

5. “I want to speak to a lawyer. I’m invoking the Fifth.”

The moment things get uncomfortable or confusing, say this.

Don’t explain. Don’t argue. Don’t guess. Just shut it down with this phrase.

Remember: You’re not trying to win an argument... you’re trying to protect your rights. You don’t need to be a legal expert to handle these situations like a pro.

What to do if an airline loses your luggage

You’ve just landed. You’re standing at baggage claim. The carousel goes round and round... and your suitcase? Nowhere to be seen.

Great.

Before you panic and cause a scene with the airline desk, here’s what you actually need to do.

Step 1: Ask for a Property Irregularity Report

This is the form that kicks off the compensation process.

No report = no payout.

Make sure to file it within 4 hours of realizing your bag’s gone.

Step 2: Be honest about what was inside

You might be tempted to claim your suitcase was full of designer gear and gold bars.

Don’t.

Lying on the form is fraud... and yes, it can land you in actual legal trouble.

Step 3: Know what you’re entitled to

If you’re flying domestic (in the US.), airlines may have to cough up to $4,700 to cover your lost items.

Flying international? The cap drops to around $1,700... thanks to the Montreal Convention.

Losing your bag sucks. But losing your bag and your money? That’s optional. Follow the steps, get your cash, and salvage those vacation vibes.
